MD Urges Better Licensing After Hepatitis C Case

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland health officials are recommending stricter licensing requirements for staffing agencies that find jobs for health care professionals.

They also call for improved information sharing among states about health care workers that may pose a safety risk to patients.

The recommendations are included in a state health department report released Wednesday in response to a traveling health worker who exposed patients in Maryland and other states to hepatitis C.

David Kwiatkowski is charged in New Hampshire with stealing syringes of a powerful painkiller and replacing them with saline-filled syringes tainted with his blood. He has pleaded not guilty.

He was employed from 2008 through 2010 at four Maryland hospitals. There have been five documented cases of hepatitis C infection involving patients at two of the Maryland hospitals where Kwiatkowski worked.
