Actress, Dancer, Suzana Stankovic debuts at Cornelia Street Cafe with first-ever, site-specific show, Strangers/Lovers
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 20, 2013
Independent actress and dancer, Suzana Stankovic, makes her cabaret debut at New York City's award-winning Cornelia Street Cafe on March 23, 2013 with her first-ever, site-specific creation, Strangers/Lovers.
Strangers/Lovers is an audience-immersion, dance-theater show created specifically for Cornelia Street Cafe. Inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper and Frida Kahlo; the poems of Emily Dickinson and Pablo Neruda; and solo piano works by Eric Satie, Beethoven and others- Strangers/Lovers fuses dance, poetry, live music and performance art in a seamless 50-minute show created, directed, choreographed and performed by Suzana Stankovic and featuring U.S. dancesport champion, Jesse Benedetti and pianist Jason Yeager.
"In Strangers/Lovers I am weaving together episodes in estrangement and intimacy...the universal craving for connection; the fear of vulnerability and rejection and the longings in between..it's a very poetic and passionate show." - Suzana Stankovic.
U.S. dancesport champion, Jesse Benedetti, plays the role of stranger/lover in a sensual duet he shares with Stankovic punctuated by bursts of tenderness, desire and hostility. Jesse brings a smoldering intensity to his role and expert partnering skills. Pianist, Jason Yeager, whose album 'Ruminations' the Boston Globe cited as one of 2011's most impressive debuts, plays the role of pianist/muse and acts as a celestial stranger/lover who envelopes the space with his aura and sound. Alternating between the audience and the two men, who are both real and imaginary (at times symbolizing aspects of Stankovic's psyche), Strangers/Lovers brings to life a nuanced world of warm, blissful intimacy and crude estrangement. The audience is meant to feel fully immersed and should be prepared for possible physical contact with Stankovic.
Suzana Stankovic is an independent dance-theater artist based in New York City noted for her vision, depth and daring. A formally trained dancer and actress; choreographer, director and producer, Stankovic's credits include dancing in principal roles alongside Tony Award-winners, to starring in independent films and plays, to being the fearless solo performer blazing her own trail. She has premiered and performed her work on many of New York City's finest stages to widespread praise. Numerous publications have featured her as a performing artist and guest writer. In all she does, Stankovic's greatest aspiration is to inspire individuals to look within and live full out.
A mainstay hub of the Old Village since 1977, Cornelia Street Cafe has received diverse accolades for its culinary and cultural offerings, which include having served as the launchpad for Suzanne Vega, The Vagina Monologues and innumerable others. Cornelia Street Cafe offers 35 wines by the glass and 700 shows a year.
