DOVER, Del. - One Delaware legislator says he's fighting for the purchase of 75 ballistic-resistant vests.
Sen. Dave Lawson (R-Marydel) wants to honor the request from the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which wants to purchase new equipment for its law enforcement.
However, Lawson says it is not in Governor Jack Markell's current state budget proposal.
"Minimally, they asked for 135, they only got 70 funded," said Lawson. "Yet, it's okay to put in the budget $200,000 to do a useless gun buy back program off the street yet we don't save our officers by putting them in body armor. I find that unconscionable."
The cost for the body armor is reportedly $54,000.
