Md. Could Be First To Impose Statewide 5-cent Bag Charge

MARYLAND - Maryland could become the first state to impose a tax for disposable bags this year.

Under the proposal, shoppers would be charged a nickel for each bag. Merchants would be able to keep about a penny per bag, and stores that offer a rebate to customers who bring their own bags could keep two cents for each disposable bag sold.
