SALISBURY, Md. - Emotions are high after a James M. Bennett High School student was killed during a chase with Salisbury Police.
15-year-old Jorgens Sydney was stopped for a traffic violation on Camden avenue last Thursday night. Officers say the teen was driving a relative's car without a permit or license, tried to flee, then crashed into a pole.
Salisbury Police asked Maryland State Police to conduct the crash reconstruction, to show no impartiality. As standard practice, two officers have been suspended. Chief Barbara Duncan says this ordeal has emotionally impacted the department.
"There's a lot of speculation that's out there, and again I can't stress enough that we don't comment on the speculation that's happening right now and that we allow the process to continue," said Chief Barbara Duncan with the Salisbury Police Department.
Chief Duncan also says they can't say whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. She says they have ordered a toxicology test, but don't expect the results to come back for a couple of weeks.
As mentioned, Sydney was just a freshman at Bennett High School. School officials tell WMDT that grief counselors are on hand, and available to students and staff who need support.
They released a statement saying "JMB has lost one of its family members and the staff and students at JMB are grieving. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends at this time."
