VA House Named As National Historic Landmark

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A home on Virginia's Eastern Shore that dates to 1740 has been named as a national historic landmark.
    
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis announced the designation for the wood-frame house known as Pear Valley on Monday.
    
Officials say the Eastville house is an excellent, rare surviving example of the distinctive form of architecture that developed in the Chesapeake Bay region.
    
The national historic landmark program was established in 1935 and is administered by the National Park Service. There are currently 2,540 designated national historic landmarks.
    
Officials say the landmarks possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the U.S.
