Bennett Middle Student Wins UMES Spelling Bee, Spot At Nationals

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - An Eastern Shore middle school student is heading to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Khaled Mohamed, a Bennett Middle School 7th grader won the inaugural University of Maryland Eastern Shore Spelling Bee.

Khaled spelled 33 words correctly. His winning word was "eulogy." WMDT caught up with the champion who told us about his "unique" routine.

"I ate Salmon because it's good for brain power," said Mohamed. "This morning, I ate blueberries because that's also good for brain. The food played a good part in it, too."

This was Khaled's very first spelling bee. He says he's excited for D.C. and doesn't get nervous in front of crowds.

We are told that Khaled won an all-expenses paid trip to the finals, courtesy of the regional spelling bee sponsor, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Also, he received a medallion and a Merriam-Webster 3rd-edition unabridged dictionary.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held on May 28th-30th.
