What Unemployment Rates May Mean For Eastern Shore

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - February's job numbers are in and 236,000 jobs were added.

The increase shot the unemployment rate to its lowest since December 2008, with a 7.7 percent.

It's a good sign, but for those on the Eastern Shore that rate may not hold true.

"Ocean City, you still have unemployment figures around 12 to 13 percent because of the time of year," said Milton Morris, One Stop Job Market workforce director on recent unemployment rates in local areas.

Morris' job is to train people who have been out of work and are looking to get back in.

But he says finding a job during the winter months is more daunting.

"This time last year, we placed 129 people in training programs," said Morris. "This year, we're somewhere around 83."

Recent budget cuts aren't making things easier.

"There are real people out there who will be delayed or who will have their wages cut or who will lose their jobs," said Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary earlier this week.

Milton adds that unemployment numbers could take another dip.

The sequestration means five percent cuts across the board and this is on top of cuts that have actually happened in the past few years," said Morris.
