Sandy Recovery At Assateague Island Still On Track, Despite Storms

Posted: Updated:

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. - Recovery efforts from Sandy are still underway on Assateague Island, despite a small set back from yesterday's storm.

Park officials say they're working on nature trails and the ferry landing, but larger restoration projects, which are still in the planning phases, will get rolling once winter is over.

In terms of flooding, the main entrance road at Bayside Drive, and a few of the Bayside campgrounds, are now closed.

"Safety is our first priority, and some of that water would be deep enough that it would be difficult for most vehicles to get through," said Rachelle Daigneault, Chief of Interpretation & Education at Assateague Island National Seashore.

"But, our Bayside camping was open, and our Ocean side camping and walking sites will be open for Easter," said Daigneault.

Daigneault says the Virginia end of Assateague Island had more wash over of water and sand in parking lots already damaged by Sandy, but they expect the lots should also be open by Easter, as well.
