Fulfilling James Henderson's Final Wishes

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, Md. - His story captured the attention of hundreds here on Delmarva, rallying support around a man, who fought for our country.

"They can't guarantee me that I'm going to live 10 years, 15 years, or 30 years. I don't have any idea but I feel good," said James Henderson in an interview with WMDT in March of 2012.

The former Marine from Delmar was battling an aggressive form of cancer, and making great strides in his recovery. However, now the hourglass is more than half empty, after doctors gave him just six months to live.

"He just had his 37th birthday. At 37 you shouldn't be thinking about your mortality," said James 'wife, Alice.

Alice also says they found out the glioblastoma attacked both sides of his brain, leaving him with inoperable tumors.

"It's still like a really bad dream," she said.

20 months of heartache, physical agony and now the stress over losing their home to foreclosure, being four months behind on their mortgage.

"Going from a six-figure income to going to stand in line at the food bank has just been an eye opener," said Alice.

Now the Hendersons are hoping the community can rally behind them, one last time, to help fulfil James' final wishes.

"He wanted to visit his family in Illinois. His mom and dad and two brother are out there," she said.

Because of James' deteriorating health, he is unable to fly. His family can, however, but just don't have the funds to make it here.

James is also a huge Chicago Bears fan, and would love the opportunity to meet them, but would be happy with an autographed photo instead!

Most importantly, Alice says James could leave with a clear conscious, knowing the house his five children call home, remains under the Henderson name.

If you would like to make a donation, there's a fund set up at the Bank Of Delmarva, called Healing Henderson. The family is also looking into organizing several fundraising events. We'll keep you posted on those dates, as soon as we know them.
