Salisbury Optimist Club Helping Youth Through College

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - Their motto is the "friend of Youth" and for 60 years, The Salisbury Optimist Club has been just that.

"We really want to keep them on the right path, for mind and body, so not just the athletics. We're a big supporter of that, but also for schooling," said Salisbury Optimist Club President, Mike DeFiore.

That is why they stash away cash so students can fulfill their dreams. If you've ever gone or participated in the "Better Living Expo" at the Civic Center, your money went right back in the community.

"That major event is what funds just about all our programs," said DeFiore.

It's also how they help send one senior each, from Delmar, Mardela, Parkside, Wicomico, and Bennett High schools, off to college.

"We look at their grades, we look at their involvement in extracurricular activities, sports or any other type of clubs, also their community involvement," said DeFiore.

This year, they have five $1,500 checks, which will be written right out to the student. It can be used for books, a laptop, tuition or whatever is needed.

Students interested in this scholarship, should apply right now, because the deadline is coming up on Friday March 15th. Click here for more details: http://www.delmarvaed.org/.
