GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - The Delmarva Shorebirds, class "A" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are excited to announce the return of their preseason promotion "30 Days of Opening Day" to prepare the Eastern Shore for the April 4th home opener at 7:05pm against the Hagerstown Suns.
Starting on March 5th, which is 30 days before opening day, the Shorebirds will host an event, contest, or make an appearance around town every day leading up to the home opener.
The "30 Days of Opening Day" will feature 12 appearances by Sherman, 14 different chances to win t-shirts, hats, bobbleheads, tickets, and various other prizes.
"The 30 Days of Opening Day promotion was wildly successful last year in energizing the community for baseball season and we look forward to the second year of the promotion," said Shorebirds general manager Chris Bitters. "I encourage all of our fans to embrace the promotion and take advantage of the numerous opportunities to win great prizes, hang out with Sherman and have fun!"
The promotion will begin on March 5th with Sherman the Shorebird making a guest appearance on Good Morning Delmarva on WMDT to deliver the local weather at 6:50am. After Sherman's report, tune in at 7:45am to the Whiskey & Randy show on Froggy 99.9 to hear what Shorebirds General Manager Chris Bitters has to say about his expectations for the upcoming season. Later that day, Sherman will make his first guest appearance at The Centre at Salisbury Mall at noon with free tickets to the home opener for the first ten people that can find him and say "Go Shorebirds".
Sherman will make "tour stops" every Thursday and Friday throughout the 30 day promotion. The Shorebirds will set up outside of different locations around town and will be giving away free tickets to the home opener on April 4, passing out schedules, and hosting entertainment and games for kids that want to come out and meet Sherman. Every kid will get a chance to spin the prize wheel and take a swing at our t-ball whacker. During the first week, Sherman is scheduled to appear at ATI Physical Therapy on North Salisbury Blvd on Thursday, March 7th from 5-7 p.m. and DQ Grill and Chill on North Salisbury Blvd on Friday, March 8th from 5-7 pm. On Sunday, March 10, Sherman and Shorebirds staff members will be at the Tim Kennard River Run. The race begins at 9:30 a.m. at Salisbury University's Maggs Physical Activities Center. Sherman's busy schedule during the "30 Days of Opening Day" will also include The Ocean City St. Patrick's Day parade on March 16th and the Fruitland Easter parade on March 30th.
The Shorebirds will hold reoccurring contests through our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (@Shorebirds) pages during the "30 Days of Opening Day" promotion. On Merchandise Monday (March 11, March 18, March 25 and April1), take a picture of yourself in your favorite Shorebirds apparel and post it to our Facebook page. The picture with the most "likes" by 3:00pm will receive a free Shorebirds hat, t-shirt, and 10% off card for any purchases made at the Flock Shop during the 2013 season. During Retweet Tuesday (March 12, March 19, March 26 and April 2), fans are being asked to retweet a graphic illustrating Opening Day which will be posted by the Shorebirds via Twitter. Anyone who retweets the graphic has a chance to win free tickets for the first game of the season. On Weenie Wednesday (March 13, March 20, March 27 and April 3), fans can come to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium between 10am and 5pm and get one hot dog voucher good for a free Esskay hot dog at any home game in 2013 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. In 2013, the Shorebirds are making the switch to new hot dog provider, Esskay, the official hot dog vendor of the Baltimore Orioles and Delmarva Shorebirds. From 12-1pm on Weenie Wednesday, the Shorebirds will set up a t-ball whacker for kids and Sherman the Shorebird will be around to interact with fans and take pictures. Instagram Sunday (March 17 and March 24) involves fans wearing Shorebirds gear and posting a picture to their personal Instagram pages and using the hashtag #ShermanSunday. The post that receives the most likes will win free tickets to Opening Day.
One of the new contests the Shorebirds are hosting this year is a month long promotion that offers the chance to win the Ultimate Fan Experience. The winner gets two free tickets to a game, watches batting practice from the field, delivers the line-up card to the umpire and joins in on the radio broadcast for an inning. To become eligible for the Ultimate Fan Experience, you must partake in at least four promotional activities. This includes coming to one of the tour stops, coming to the Fan Fest on March 23rd at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, participating in one of the four social media contests, find a pocket schedule somewhere around town and take a picture with it, and come to the Shorebirds season opener.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, the Shorebirds will take the field for the first time in an exhibition game against local Division III baseball team Salisbury University. Tickets for the game will be available at the Shorebirds Box Office and on the campus at Salisbury University.

In 2007, The Shorebirds had the top attendance based on market size in Minor League Baseball(tm), according to Sports Business Journal (Aug. 2008). In 2010, more than 6,000 fans packed Arthur W. Perdue Stadium nine times including a season high of 8,993 fans on August 7th. In 2012, the Shorebirds welcomed 13 crowds of over 5,000 fans.
