Dewey Beach Considers New Tax To Address Deficit - WMDT 47 News - Delmarva's Choice

DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) - Town officials in Dewey Beach are considering a new tax on businesses to help bring more revenue to address the town's financial deficit.
    
The Budget and Finance Committee is considering a gross receipts tax on business revenues to help bring in more money from tourism to fund city services. Committee member Rich Miller says Dewey is facing a deficit of about $300,000.
    
The maximum tax would be 3 percent on businesses such as bars and restaurants. Other businesses would pay less.
    
Small businesses have voiced some objections to the idea.
    
Committee Chair Courtney Riordan says it's only fair for businesses to pay the town back for services.
    
If town officials pursue the tax plan, a public referendum would be held in September for residents and property owners to vote.
