Pentagon Sends Letter To O'Malley On Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Pentagon has sent Gov. Martin O'Malley a letter on the impact of automatic federal budget cuts.

The letter, sent Friday and obtained by The Associated Press, says the Army would lose $95 million in base operations funding across the state, including cuts at Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground. The Air Force would lose at least $10 million to its operations, including reductions in facilities projects at Andrews Air Force Base. The Navy would lose $9 million for a demolition project at Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

The letter says most of the Defense Department's civilian employees in Maryland would be placed on unpaid furlough status for up to 22 discontinuous workdays, affecting about 46,000 workers.
