PITTSVILLE, Md. - Lavinia "Beanie" Clara Shockley Hearn departed this life on February 27, 2013 after many years of declining health. She was born in August 3, 1927 on a farm outside of Pittsville, MD to the late Carl Wade Shockley and Helen Oliphant Shockley. Lavinia was married to her first husband, Marion K. Smith Jr., on October 20, 1950. He died February 13, 1955. She married Robert T. Hearn on May 1, 1958 and he preceded her in death on October 21, 2001. Lavinia has a son, Marion K. Smith III (Jan Ruffner Smith) of Riverside, CA; two step-children, Nancy Hearn Willis (James) of Fremont, OH and Robert Vernon Hearn of Salisbury, MD. She is also survived by a sister, Louetta Shockley Pryor (Richard) of Salisbury, MD; four grandchildren: Justin R. Willis of Columbus, OH, J. Brennan Willis (Carrie Miller Willis) of Fremont, OH, Ami Lynn Smith of Riverside, CA and Kara Lea Smith of Springville, UT and a niece, Terry Shockley Staggs of Fernley, NV. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwood and Melvin Shockley.
Lavinia graduated from Wicomico Senior High School in 1945 and Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing in 1961. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education from UMES and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore. She later received a Certificate of Masters Experience from the Maryland Department of Education from Salisbury State. Lavinia was employed from 1945-1958 by T. L. Ruark & Co. and Dresser/Wayne Pump Co. as a secretary-bookkeeper. After receiving a nursing degree in 1961, she served as a clinical instructor for Peninsula General Hospital, a part-time instructor at the Sussex County Tech Center in Delaware and the department head of the Practical Nursing Department of the Wicomico County Vocational Tech Center in Salisbury. She worked for the Department of Education-Food and Nutrition Division involved in the school lunch program. She held a position with the Foster Care Review Board for 20 years. Throughout this time, she was a general and private duty nurse retiring in 1988 from Deer's Head Center in Salisbury.
Lavinia was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, its UMW Group and the Mar-Zion Homemakers Club.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Holloway Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Monday, March 4, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Rev. Linda Mariner and Rev. Rich Walton will officiate. Interment will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.
