PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - It looks like football will not be coming back to a local university. University of Maryland Eastern Shore's President Juliette B. Bell announced on Thursday, that the University will not reinstate intercollegiate football, within the next five years.
President Bell and a task force that was created to look at the issue, were unanimous in the decision. The report released by the task force says "The university is not currently in position, with either human or fiscal resources, to reinstate football at this time." Officials feel that supporting a Division 1 football team would be too costly at this time. Football was last played at UMES in 1979.
President Bell released a statement saying "I know some of our alumni, especially those who were here when the university fielded a football team, may be disappointed, however, I know that they share my respect for the unforgettable football legacy of this institution. We live in challenging economic times, we must continue to focus the university's limited resources on its core mission of educating students."
