WMDT 47 News - As cases of cyber bullying escalate, parents struggle to keep up.
"It's very scary. It's very scary about all the technology they have nowadays," concerned parent Chris Mumford said.
He is just one of many parents looking for ways to better protect their children from cyber-bullying.
That's where EyeGuardian steps in. It's a website designed to help parents track their kids' activity on Facebook, whether its nudity in photos, obscenity in videos, threats to your privacy, friend requests from suspicious profiles, bad language and even excessive time spent gaming on the social media site.
"Bullying used to take place just in school, and now, it's everywhere out there - all the bits of info that's flying around," Mumford said.
Here's how it works: after you create an account, you can add your child's Facebook page to your dashboard. The program will scan their profiles once a day using visual technology to pick up on vulgar content in images, and look for key words such as hit, kick, suicide, marijuana and beer. Whenever something illicit shows up, you'll get an alert via email or text and be able to view the flagged content.
Although it may seem like an invasion of privacy, experts say it's crucial. "While privacy is an important thing to respect, as a parent, you have to monitor it. And it's important to do that for a variety of reasons - bullying being one of them," Salisbury University Counselor Dawn Harner said.
EyeGuardian also allows you to look at the relationships and age differences between your child and their friends. If there is a large age gap, they'll send you an alert for you to check out.
