Music, Movie Industry To Warn Copyright Infringers

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON D.C. - Internet users who illegally share music, movies or TV online may soon get warning notices from their service providers that they are violating the law. Ignore it, and face a potential Internet slow-down for 48 hours.

For the first time since the unpopular lawsuits of the mid-2000s, the music and movie industries are going after people suspected of violating copyright laws by swapping digital files online. But unlike the lawsuits, the latest effort is aimed at educating the casual infringer and getting them to stop on their own. There are multiple chances to make amends, and no real, legal consequences if you don't stop.

Consumer advocates say they'll be watching to ensure the program doesn't cause headaches for Internet users.
