SALISBURY, Md. - Doran E. Christensen, 81, of Salisbury, Maryland, died on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his home after a battle with cancer. Born in Westhope, North Dakota on September 28, 1931, he was the son of the late Henry and Edna Lee Christensen. He grew up on a small farm in North Dakota and subsequently graduated from Minot State College with a degree in Education. Doran was a classroom educator as well as music teacher in North Dakota and Minnesota. He later moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked for NCATE, a teacher education accrediting organization. During this time he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. He then relocated to Tennessee where he was the Department Chair of Education at Tennessee Tech University. In 1989 he moved to Salisbury, where he took the position of Dean of Education and Professional Studies at Salisbury University until his retirement in 1997. Doran was active in the Rotary Club as well as the Wicomico Democratic Club. He enjoyed traveling, reading, discussing philosophy, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Doran is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice Meddaugh Christensen; four sons, Ned Christensen of San Antonio, TX, Ken Christensen and his wife Nancy of Bethlehem, PA, Bruce Christensen and his wife DeeDee of Nashville, TN and Scott Christensen and his wife Michelle of Fruitland, MD; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and his brother, Lowell Christensen of Sacramento, CA.
