Senators Have Many Questions On Gun Control Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A proposal to require fingerprints from people who buy handguns in Maryland has generated a lot of discussion and questions in the state Senate.
    
The Senate took up a gun-control bill for more than two hours on Tuesday. Senators took turns asking questions about the measure that has the backing of Gov. Martin O'Malley.
    
The new licensing proposal that would require fingerprints is one of the most contentious aspects of the bill. Supporters say it will stop people from buying handguns for people who are prohibited from owning them. But opponents question whether that's as big of a problem as supporters say.
    
The Senate is scheduled to consider amendments to the bill Wednesday morning.
    
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, D-Calvert, says he hopes to have a vote by Friday.
