Md. Comptroller Franchot's Spending Under Scrutiny

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Two state senators are questioning travel expenses incurred by Comptroller Peter Franchot to distribute four kinds of awards. But Franchot says he believes the motivation for their inquiries is political rather than fiscal stewardship.

Franchot responded Friday in a three-page letter to Sen. Nancy King, D-Montgomery, and Sen. David Brinkley, R-Frederick.

The senators wrote this week that the awards are not related to his job as chief tax collector. They asked for a copy of his travel schedule and related costs.

Franchot says he disputes the suggestion that he can only carry out his duties in Annapolis. He says he thinks their letter stems from positions he has taken as an independent elected official.
