Ms. Amber Dorman Ms. Amber Dorman

Teacher Name: Ms. Amber Dorman - Grade 7 Reading/Language teacher

School: Mardela Middle and High School

School City, State: Mardela Springs, Maryland 21837

Reason You Are Nominating Your Teacher: "I am nominating Ms. Amber Dorman for the Teachers Who Make a DIfference contest for so many reasons. Her enthusiasm for reading and literature is contagious in her classroom! Luring in and keeping the attention of 7th graders is not always an easy task for any middle school teacher, but Ms. Dorman does this on a daily basis. Her creative lesson plans and willingness to think outside the box allows her students the opportunity to bring the reading of complex texts to life, thereby increasing their understanding of and connection to the material. As a co-worker, I have had the privilege of seeing her students hold court to reinact the case of Typhoid Mary, or take on roles and create costumes to act out A Christmas Carol, or write creative extensions to stories they have read and studied, or create a multitude of projects that put them into the experiences of the characters they read about in her classroom. Ms. Dorman takes risks. She is not a teacher who wants to see her students sitting quietly in traditional rows; rather, she encourages interaction and discussion and communication every day, so her students benefit from the opportunity to engage in purposeful talk with one another. Their reading comprehension soars, and their love of literature grows!! The strong scores of her students on county and state assessments also attest to her effectiveness as a teacher!! I am so proud of Ms. Dorman as a reading teacher for a more personal reason as well: many years ago, she sat in my own reading classroom as one of my students, so to see her grow into such an amazing teacher is quite a bonus. Her students love her! They want to do well in her classroom. They rise to the expectations she sets and often soars past them. For these reasons, Ms. Amber Dorman is truly a teacher who makes a difference in the lives of her students."
