Md. Mega Millions Winner Is Grandmother Of 2

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland lottery officials say a 48-year-old grandmother of two from Mount Airy was the winner of this week's Mega Millions jackpot.

Officials say the woman has claimed her prize but wishes to remain anonymous. While Tuesday's annuity jackpot was valued at $26 million, the woman chose the cash option and will take home $12.6 million after taxes.

The woman is retired and spends time babysitting her grandchildren. Lottery officials say she plans to buy a beach house and that she'll be the first person in her immediate family ever to own a home.

She became the first Marylander to win a Mega Millions jackpot since three public education employees took home part of a record $656 million jackpot in March 2012.
