Obama To Visit Virginia Shipbuilding Operation

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - President Barack Obama will return to Virginia next week.

The White House said Thursday that Obama will visit a shipbuilding operation in Newport News on Tuesday.

Officials did not elaborate on the nature of Obama's visit. But it comes days before the March 1 deadline in which automatic government spending cuts kick in unless Congress acts to avoid them.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Congress on Wednesday that he may have to shorten the workweek for the "vast majority" of the Defense Department's 800,000 civilian workers. That would mean nearly $661 million in payroll losses for Virginia civilian workers.

With its vast military and defense operations and civilian shipbuilding activities, Virginia is expected to be one of the hardest hit states if the cuts happen.
