Delaware Courthouse Shooter Had Brain Tumor

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. - A former police officer who killed his ex-daughter-in-law and another woman at a Delaware courthouse before fatally shooting himself was diagnosed more than 20 years ago with a brain tumor.

The diagnosis was made in 1990 by a neurosurgeon at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia who examined Thomas Matusiewicz.

In a letter to another doctor obtained by The Associated Press Wednesday, the neurosurgeon said Matusiewicz had a meningioma about four centimeters deep and about five centimeters in diameter. But the neurosurgeon noted that Matusiewicz was not suffering any symptoms and recommended only that the tumor be monitored to see if it was growing, in which case surgery was recommended.

Matusiewicz's family has said they believe his violent actions last week may have been affected by an untreated brain tumor.
