MD Firm Recalls Spice Product Recall

BALTIMORE, Md.  - State health officials say a Hyattsville company is recalling a spice product called akanwu lubi after significant levels of lead were found in some samples.
    
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Wednesday that Nina International had voluntarily recalled the products. Akanwu lubi is used in African cuisine as a spice, soup thickener and a tenderizer for meat and fish.
    
The department urged residents not to consume any Nina International products labeled ground akanwu or akanwu lubi. Consumers should return the items to the place of purchase.
    
The products were distributed in Maryland, Virginia and Washington.
