Harris Hosts Discussion On Gun Safety Issues

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - In front of over 200 constituents, Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) opens the dialogue about the potential changes to gun laws.

Before making any drastic changes, He says it's important to approach it carefully and thoughtfully.

"If we take the wrong path and we just restrict access to firearms, we're not going to solve the problem," said Harris.

He adds that he wants to change violence as a whole and believes it begins with violent video games and exposure to violence on TV.

"We ought to send a message, especially to our youth that violent behavior is not an acceptable behavior in this civilized society."

Ron Pagano, who owns two handguns, says he came to the event to hear what Harris has to say about the issue.  He added that change needs to come.

"We don't have a universal right to own any kind of weapon we want," said Pagano. "Where do we stop? Do we stop at nuclear tactical weapons? Do we stop at shoulder mounted missiles? Mines in our backyard?"

But others say gun control is an attack on their rights.

"I want to know the answer where does it stop, before it starts attacking my fishing poles, my guns, my lands and my gods," said Bill Justice.

Harris says he doesn't expect an assault weapons ban at the federal level to go through.
