Prosecutors Rebuff Ex-U.Va. Lax Player's Appeal

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Prosecutors say a former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend shouldn't be given a new trial.

Lawyers for George W. Huguely V in January filed a petition with the Virginia Court of Appeals, arguing that constitutional and procedural errors entitle him to a new trial.

But WVIR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/14XfRAP) that in a response filed Friday, prosecutors rebuffed claims that Huguely was denied the right to his chosen lawyer, the right to a fair and impartial jury, and other violations.

The Maryland man is serving 23 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder in the May 2010 slaying of 22-year-old Yeardley Love. She was found dead in her Charlottesville bedroom after Huguely confronted Love after a day of heavy drinking.
