"Love Doctor" Breaks Down Biggest Relationship Blunders (Part 1)

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - When it comes to relationships, it's easy to just say "men are from Mars and women are from Venus." But why exactly is it so difficult to understand each other, and what are some of the biggest mistakes people make in relationships?

Just in time for Valentine's Day, one local "love doctor" breaks it down.

Ladies - think your man is an emotional dud? Dr. Leslie Donnelly says, don't push it.

"If you say you need to talk more, you need to tell me more, than he's going to think 'she's getting on my nerves, she's being demanding. I don't need to tell her everything.' And then she gets even more insecure and it pushes him away. I think if you step back, then the men will talk when they're ready," she said.

Guys - when your woman unloads her problems on you, are you always trying to fix them? Big mistake.
"In general, men like to find solutions. And then the women feel like he's not really listening. 'He's just telling me what to do, and I don't want to be told what to do. I just want to be heard.' Whereas the men feel like they're helping," Dr. Donnelly said.

And if you go from relationship to relationship, hoping to find someone to fulfill your every need and live happily ever after? Another big mistake.

"I think a lot of it is our society. If you look at cultures where they have arranged marriages, they actually later in life report higher levels of happiness than Americans do. So I think it's a decision that 'I'm going to stay with this person, I'm going to make this work,' whereas we are looking for the next best thing. 'This isn't right, or that's not right, so I'm going to find the perfect person,' which doesn't exist," Dr. Donnelly said.

Unrealistic expectations set yourself up for failure. Dr. Donnelly says finding love is about confidence and being happy with yourself.
