Major Changes Coming To Local Post Office

Posted: Updated:

DEAL ISLAND, Md. - It's no secret that the United State Postal Service is facing some budget shortfalls, but folks all over the nation, including the shore, are up in arms over potential cuts.  Monday night in Deal Island, the community got to voice their concerns over *MAJOR* changes being proposed for a local post office.

Post office officials wouldn't allow WMDT cameras inside the meeting, but Deal Island residents who turned out to the Monday night meeting did not hold back their frustrations over proposed changes.

"Keep it the same, keep it the same," said Deal Island resident Barrow Vaness.

The plan is to reduce hours at this location by half to just 4 hours a day, 8am to 12pm during the week and 8am to 11am on Saturday.  Officials say these hours are not set in stone, and discussion over the truncated schedule dominated the conversation.

Another concern, the next closest Post Office is 15 miles away in Princess Anne.

Bernadette Gresser of Chance, Maryland is a self publisher.  Gresser says she often mails her books to customers later in the afternoon, but "if I had to go to Princess Anne, I'd have to go over 30 miles, and with today's gas prices, it'd be quite of an expense for such a small business that I have."

The reason for these cuts, huge revenue losses.  Since 2005, retail visits to Post Offices dropped from 1.28 billion to 93 million, a difference of 27%.  Reports show they lost $16 billion last year alone.

When asked why others should care about the shorter hours at the Deal Island post office, Gesser said "Because it could happen to them."

And chances are, it will.  The latest reports show about 24 to 26 post offices across Delmarva will be cutting their hours over the coming months.

Officials say no sooner than 10 days from February 12, they will solidify the Deal Island location's operating hours, and once that's done, sometime after 30 days the new hours could take effect.
