O'Malley Working On Transportation Funding Bill

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A spokeswoman for Gov. Martin O'Malley says he is working to build a consensus with the Legislature for a measure to raise revenue for transportation needs this session.

Takirra Winfield said Tuesday the discussion continues on the details.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller told reporters on Tuesday that O'Malley favors raising the sales tax to fund transportation improvements.

The Senate president has pitched several ideas to help Maryland raise badly needed transportation revenue. They include allowing county governments to raise Maryland's gas tax by up to 5 cents for local transportation needs and selling or leasing the Intercounty Connector.

Last year, O'Malley, a Democrat, pushed for a measure to phase in a 6 percent sales tax on a gallon of gasoline, but the proposal stalled.
