Rep. Carney Discusses Gun Control Proposals, Spending Cuts

Posted: Updated:

MILFORD, Del. - Congress is currently putting together proposals to try and combat gun violence.

WMDT caught up with Rep. John Carney (D), who is on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He says he is not only looking at assault weapons and background checks, but also mental health and school safety.

"One of the best things we can do is implement a universal background check, but more important than that is to enforce it and to enforce not allowing people who are prohibited whether for mental health or for prior criminal convictions," said Carney.

Despite his proposals, the Congressman says to WMDT that when it comes to gun violence in his state, he thinks the issue is hand-gun violence associated with drug trade and drug trafficking.

Also, as the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts deadline approaches, Rep. Carney says that Congress must step up with "a series of cuts and tax reforms that would generate additional revenue."

"Congress has shown that it needs the discipline of that kind of a deadline in order to act," said Carney. "We haven't shown the ability to do that and we must."

The spending cuts would total $1.2 trillion over 10 years and the deadline is set for March 1st.
