Maryland Republican Chairman Alex Mooney Stepping Down

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex X. Mooney has announced he will resign from the post.

Mooney announced his resignation Saturday. He says it takes effect March 1. First Vice Chairman Diana Waterman will serve as party chairman until the party's spring convention on April 20. That's when a new chairman will be elected.

In a letter to Republican committee members, Mooney says it's time for him to pursue other ventures after two years as chairman. He says the Maryland GOP is strong financially after raising $1.1 million in 2012. He says the party's staff is focused on grass-roots party building to support candidates.

Mooney had been working for former Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett while planning to run for Bartlett's seat in 2014. Bartlett lost the seat in the 2012 election.
