Love Creek Residents Rally Against Proposed RV City

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - A 628-lot RV campground which includes 516 RV spots, 82 rental cabins, 30 tents and an amphitheater and dockside bar, that's what contractors are proposing to build on Love Creek.

It may sound like a great vacation spot for campers, but people living along the creek are afraid their peaceful environment may turn into a noisy theme park.

"It's going to ruin Love Creek," said Sandy Spence, a Sea Wood resident.

Paul Hammesfahr the Retreat at Love Creek Home Owner's Association presidents says that "this is a residential community that is all surrounding a new city the size of Lewes."

Saturday, five communities surrounding the Creek and other nearby developments took to Briarwood Estates to rally to "Stop RV City."

For residents, the issues are as wide as the 162-acre creek.

Steve Britz, a Webb's Landing residents says it would be a huge "cost to the community to develop infrastructure of the roads [and] the sewers."

"There's no question in my mind anyway that they are going to leave to go to the beach-area and traverse the roads," said Hammesfahr.

Terri Kordel, who lives at the Retreat at Love Creek says it will create a traffic nightmare, especially near Cedar Grove Road. She says an S-curve in the area is bound to cause issues for the 40 foot-long RVs.

"It's a narrow, windy two-lane country road that was not designed for this kind of heavy traffic," said Kordel.

But Jim Bardsley, a Briarwood Estates resident, doesn't seem to think of the proposal as a bad idea. He owns an RV himself and used to work at the old Three Seasons RV Resort in Rehoboth Beach.

"With improvements to what they have now, I can envision an RV park [at Love Creek].

As the community rallies around their creek, they say they want to keep it the way it's zoned, as a residential area.

"There's going to be tremendous impact and I don't think that's been properly considered," said Britz.

We reached out to the developers of the Love Creek RV Resort and Campground, but have yet to hear back from them. A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19th.
