New Castle Officer Dragged, Hurt In Traffic Stop

Posted: Updated:

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - A New Castle County police officer has been injured after he was dragged several hundred feet by a suspect who was fleeting a traffic stop.

Police say the officer pulled over 25-year-old Nicholas Scalia of the Richardson Park area Friday for a traffic violation. But during the stop, Scalia fled and dragged the officer with his vehicle.

Police say the 29-year-old officer sustained significant injuries Friday. Investigators say the officer was dragged by a Hummer SUV, then freed himself and fell to the roadway.

Police from Elsmere, Wilmington and Delaware State Police helped chase the suspect and eventually arrested him. Scalia was treated for minor injuries and was charged with reckless endangering, assault and other charges.

The officer was treated for his injuries and was released from the hospital.
