WMDT 47 NEWS - Maryland congressional leaders are stepping up to honor Harriet Tubman.
Next Wednesday, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) will join several groups to call for federal legislation to create two national historical parks.
Also, Congressman Andy Harris (R-Dist. 1) has introduced bills in the House to establish these parks, which would include the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot counties.
In a statement, Rep. Harris says that he "can't think of a better person to honor during Black History Month than Maryland's own Harriet Tubman. Her contribution to improving the lives of fellow Americans needs no explanation.
"She fought for justice and equality when slavery was a regular part of life. Her courage and steadfastness blazed the trail for those who lived during this dark period in our country's history. Ms. Tubman is a role model for all Americans, and I'm proud to once again sponsor this legislation in her honor."
