Local Shop Dishes Out Sweet Treats

SEAFORD, Del. - If candy is on the shopping list for that special someone this Valentine's Day, why not buy local?  From chocolate truffles, to chocolate pretzels, and chocolate covered peanut butter, Sweet Serenity Chocolates has enough to make a candy lover's heart quiver, and the best part is it's all made right here on Delmarva.

Rachel and Chris J. Benjamin bought the Seaford business in 2011 and they've been rolling in the dough (literally).  A former stay at home mom, Rachel used to make candy for her family and friend in her spare time, so when she decided to go back to work, she went with what she knew.

Sweet Serenity Chocolate is at the tail end of one of it's busiest times, "We have, just coming off of Christmas and then Valentine's Day is definitely one if our biggest holidays," says Rachel.  And during their biggest season, the biggest selling item is the chocolate covered strawberries.  Sweet Serenity sold over 300 pounds of strawberries and 500 pounds of chocolate.

Despite dips in the economy, Rachel says the Seaford community has really helped keep them afloat.

"I think people, even in this economy are willing to support local businesses and splurge on themselves a little bit and get some really good candy," she says.
