Jury Begins Deliberations In Case Of Slain NC Teen

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore jury has begun deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of a man accused of killing a North Carolina teenager.

The case against 28-year-old Michael Maurice Johnson went to the jury Monday afternoon. Johnson is accused in the 2010 slaying of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes. The teenager from Monroe, N.C., was visiting relatives in Baltimore when she disappeared. Her body was found in the Susquehanna River months after she went missing.

Prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses during the trial. Defense lawyers called one. Johnson did not testify.

Defense lawyers told the jury in closing arguments that prosecutors failed to show a motive.
