SALISBURY, Md. -- Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women, which is why the month of February is National Heart Month. To kick start it off, Friday was "National Wear Red Day" to help raise awareness of heart disease.
Friday morning at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, employees adorned their best red outfits, and so did some of us here at WMDT!
When it comes to preventing the number one killer of Americans, it's all about education.
WMDT spoke with Autumn Romanowski, Wellness Manager for PRMC.
"Know you're numbers. That's what we're promoting for Heart Month. Know your blood pressure, know your cholesterol, your weight, and your blood sugar. Know those numbers and know how you can reduce those numbers and how you can be heart health," she says.
To mark the month, there are many events going on at the hospital. On Sunday, February 3rd, there will be the free "Heart and Sole" 5k Run and 2 mile Walk. The idea is to promote physical activity. It all starts at 9am. at the Avery Hall Education Center.
Then on Wednesday, Feb. 6, PRMC teams up with Atlantic General Hospital for the Tri-County Go Red at Berlin Intermediate School in Berlin, MD. · Stop by to take advantage of free health screenings and educational information at this event for women between 5:30-8:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, February 19, PRMC's Education Department holds a free Friends and Family CPR class from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 P.M., and on Saturday the 23rd, hospital staff will be offering free blood pressure checks at Macy's in the Centre at Salisbury.
