SALISBURY, Md. - James A. Swaney, 96, beloved patriarch of the family, passed away Thursday, Jan 24th, 2013 while at his daughter and son-in-laws home in Fairfax, VA. Born in Norfolk, VA, the son of a pharmacist and grandson of a country doctor, Swaney, as he was best known by his friends, led a long eventful life. Graduating from VPI ( VA Tech) in 1938 with a B.S in Industrial Engineering, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves. Thereafter, he acquired a position with the Eastern Shore Public Service as a Right-of Way agent in Salisbury, MD. There in 1940 he met and married the former Margaret Bailey who worked for the company. He spent 10 years on active military service during and after World War II, and retired from the Army Reserves after 23 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. During the war he was deployed overseas to New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa, and later to the US Mission in Ankara, Turkey. Thereafter he returned to ESPS in Salisbury where he worked his way up through positions of increasing responsibility and retired in 1975 as the Vice President for Industrial Sales. His favorite retirement past times were golfing which he did with a regular local foursome; traveling to such places as Italy, Germany, South Korea, Russia, Spain, and Portugal; partaking in as many eastern shore fire station all-you-can each fish or crab feasts; and in particular enjoying nature at his home of 42 years on Leonard's Mill Pond. He was active in the community in the Elks club and a respected member of St Peter's church. Swaney was revered and loved by all who knew him.
A loving and kind friend, father, and husband, he leaves loving memories to be cherished by his two children: Debbie Stevenson of Fairfax VA and her husband Jack; Michael and his wife Jennifer of Ft Lauderdale, FL; six grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren- and his devoted wife of 72 years, Margaret.
Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury will host the viewing and funeral service on Monday, Jan 28th at 10:00 and 11:00 AM respectively. Afterwards Swaney will be interred at Parson Cemetery in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers please feel free to contribute to the charity of your choice in his honor.
