SALISBURY, Md. - The city of Salisbury was named one of the top 100 places to live according to the America's Promise Alliance.

A ceremony was held in Salisbury University to celebrate the event.

"As a mayor and a teacher, it is incredibly overwhelming because I know all of the work that goes into making children safer. Building leadership, making progress in their families in terms of health. Those things have to be addressed. They have to be talked about and we do here. We're not the most perfect community ever put but this award is about moving us forward as the people and really what it is that we do for young people here on the lower shore" says mayor Jim Ireton.

Ireton was not the only politician in attendance. Maryland Senator Jim Mathias was also at the ceremony as well as Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt.

"It's a great day in Salisbury. One of the 100 best communities to raise a child. That's what it is all about. When you hear about a bright tomorrow, it's all about our children and when you look at the programs that are here, the opportunities that are here for our children, when you look at the adults, you look at all those that are here today. I'm just proud to be a part of them. When you look at Salisbury and all of America's city, one of the 100 best communities and you look at the collaboration and the partnership that's what it's all about. To look forward to a brighter tomorrow in Wicomico and in Salisbury, Maryland" Says Mathias.

The ceremony also included a dance and song performance.
