DOVER, Del. (AP) - A package of school safety bills proposed by Republican Delaware lawmakers includes crisis buttons for schools to alert authorities in case of an emergency.
A $5 million state fund for school safety grants is also among the proposals released Thursday by Republicans to address school security and gun violence. Other proposals include a system to allow for text messages to the state's emergency call centers and tougher penalties for people convicted of violent felonies who illegally possess or use a firearm.
Gov. Jack Markell last week announced his administration's plans to push for a series of gun control measures in Delaware. They include a ban on sales of military-style, assault-type semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines.
