Jan. 28 - Mission of Mercy

Posted: Updated:

GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - Mission of Mercy is a free adult dental clinic provided by volunteer dental professionals and a volunteer staff of several hundred people. The Eastern Shore Mission of Mercy (MOM) is a community event hosted by the Eastern Shore Dental Society; a component of the Maryland State Dental Association.

The focus of this mission is to provide treatment of immediate dental needs to the underserved populations on the Delmarva Peninsula.  All of the treatment will be provided by volunteer dental professionals at no cost to those receiving care.

This mission will provide a secure and supportive environment for adults on the Delmarva Peninsula who have not been able to attain necessary dental care.  The primary focus of this mission will be the alleviation of pain and infection.

This mission will also provide basic assessments of health-related issues for these members of our community, resulting in the identification of appropriate referral sources and pathways to foster continuing healthcare solutions for identified needs.

Dental services for adult patients include:
• Preventive dentistry and cleaning
• Nutritional counseling
• Restorative fillings
• Extractions

All dental services will be provided by Maryland licensed dentists and hygienists who are donating their services for this event.

We are planning to hold the inaugural Eastern Shore Mission of Mercy event at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center – March 15th-16th, 2013 from 6:00a.m. – 6:00p.m.

How can you be a part of MOM?

1.    Donate - In April, 2012, The Eastern Shore Mission of Mercy established a fund at The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore for the sole purpose of raising money to support the mission.  The total fundraising goal for the MOM is $125,000.  CFES has generously agreed to make a $10,000 matching donation to the cause and is supporting the volunteer needs of the mission through the ShoreCAN Volunteer Center.  MOM is accepting donations from individuals, corporations and local businesses.   Donations will be most appreciated whether in the form of cash or in-kind services and goods.  It all goes to a magnificent cause, to help our own neighbors!

To make a donation, visit www.easternshoremissionofmercy.org.

 2.    Volunteer - The Western Shore's first clinic in 2010 served 810 people from 7 states and 23 counties, providing $700,000 in free oral-health care.  These numbers represent the massive scope of the mission.  To make the Eastern Shore's first MOM a success, we will need support from hundreds of volunteers.

To sign up as a volunteer call 443-365-5776 or visit the website, www.easternshoremissionofmercy.org

 3.    Spread the word - The need for MOM on the Eastern Shore is great.  Help us spread the word and create awareness for the clinic.  The more people who know about this mission, the more successful it will be which will help ensure that this will be the first of many MOM's initiated on the Eastern Shore.  Tell your family, your friends, your associates at work, and at your place of worship.    There is no reason for people to suffer in silence any longer.   This mission won't provide long lasting comfort and relief for every single patient, but it will be a wonderful improvement to so many people's quality of life.
