VA Senate Panel Kills Gun Show Loophole Bill

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. - A Virginia Senate committee has killed legislation to close Virginia's so-called "gun show loophole."

The Courts of Justice Committee voted 8-7 to reject the bill Wednesday.

Last week, the panel endorsed the legislation but then reconsidered after Republican Sen. Bill Stanley of Franklin County had second thoughts. Stanley, who voted for the bill the first time, voted against it Wednesday but said he is committed to working out a compromise with gun-control advocates and opponents before next year's session.

Under current law, only licensed firearms dealers have to conduct criminal background checks on buyers at gun shows. Attempts to extend that requirement to private sellers have failed several times in recent years.
