ACCOMACK CO, Md. - With more than 30 arsons blazing through Accomack County since last November, when Adams United Methodist Church went up in flames, it was assumed it was intentionally set. "I think everybody thought that at first," said the church's pastor, Carl Perez, but after an investigation, Virginia State Police ruled out arson as the cause.
The initial call just before 9:00 AM was for smoke coming from the top of the church, but the frigid temperatures, dry air, and blustering winds fueled the fire, and helped to destroy the decades old church.
Luckily, no one was inside and there weren't any injuries.
Built in 1928, the building was home to a 135 year-old congregation. More than just brick and mortar were lost, but over a century of history and tradition.
"We have a lady driving down from Williamsburg in June, well...was, to get married here because this is where her parents were married, so this place had a lot of meaning to her, so she was going to take her vows here too as well."
Now, Adams United Methodist is looking to the future, and as for what's next, Perez says faith will help decide, saying "just thinking about what's best for the congregation, what's best for ministry, those things we'll discern as we go through the week."
