BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - One of the most highly anticipated events on Delmarva is giving back.
Flying pumpkins, good eats and plenty of entertainment are just some of the many great things that Punkin' Chunkin has to offer. The annual event in Bridgeville attracts thousands of people from all over the East coast, but last year, Hurricane Sandy swept through the area and put a damper on their turnout.
"For the first time we canceled a day. We canceled Friday and our attendance was way off," said Frank Shade, Media Director for Punkin'' Chunkin. Despite that, officials say they still had more than enough to break even.
"After all the expenses were paid they had a little extra money, and said 'what do we do with it?' Someone said 'why don't we give a scholarship' and that's pretty much how it happened," said Shade.
They award money to students seeking higher education in any field of study. Their application process is unique, with a point-based system, so you can score with your GPA, community involvement or other factors.
"They can earn points for volunteering and working with us the weekend before, or after setting up and tearing it down, so we try to make it as fair as we can," said Shade.
With $50,000 dispersed amongst 27 students, there's plenty to go around. The deadline for this scholarship is March 31st.
