Virginia Adding 6 Historic Markers

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state is minting six historical markers, including one that pays homage to a pioneering African-American race car driver.

Other markers approved by the Department of Historic Resources recognize the state's executive mansion, Danville's tobacco warehouse and residential district, the first English Thanksgiving in Virginia, the Argall settlement in James City County and Peters Park, which was home to the Danville All Stars, an African-American baseball team.

The historic marker dedicated to the executive mansion in Richmond is part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the governor's residence. The residence was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

The marker dedicated to Wendell O. Scott Sr. recognizes the racing career of a driver who broke racial barriers. The marker will rise in Danville, his hometown.
