DELAWARE - The only occupant in a small plane that crashed on Sunday night, East of Dover, has been identified. The pilot was Clifford Turen, M.D., who was an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Bayhealth Medical Center.

Bayhealth tells WMDT that Dr. Turen started with them in 2011. He also worked at the Georgia Orthopaedic Trauma Institute and worked for 20 years at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Turen served as a Commander in the Medical Corps of the United States Naval Reserve for 28 years and was selected to the Presidential Medical Support Team for President George H. W. Bush during Dr. Turen's time on active duty.

Colleagues say that Dr. Turen will be missed as both a friend and leader. "Dr. Turen was an exceptional orthopaedic surgeon, a passionate teacher, a strong leader and visionary," says Gary Siegelman, M.D., Bayhealth's Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. "He was also a friend and a colleague. He will be sorely missed."

Patients of Dr. Turen will be contacted by someone at Bayhealth Orthopaedic Surgery in Dover.
