Delaware Officials Unveil Gun Legislation

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is proposing background checks for private gun sales as part of a new package of gun control legislation for Delaware.

The proposal to end the so-called gun show loophole is one of several announced by state officials Monday following the massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut last month. Other include banning military-style, assault-type weapons and ammunition clips holding more than five rounds for rifles and 10 rounds for handguns.

Officials also are proposing a ban on guns within 1,000 feet of schools and mandatory reporting of lost and stolen firearms.

Attorney General Beau Biden said the proposed ban on assault-type weapons likely will generate the most intense debate in the legislature, but that he believes it is consistent with the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
