Delaware Officials Unveil Gun Legislation

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is joining other state officials in unveiling proposed gun legislation for Delaware.

Following the massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut last month, officials have been looking at how to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them and how to reduce gun violence, particularly mass shootings.

Delaware lawmakers voted in 2011 to join other states in sending mental health records on individuals prohibited from having firearms to a federal gun purchase background check database. But a proposal by Markell to close the so-called "gun show loophole," which excludes private firearms transactions not involving licensed dealers from federal background checks, failed to clear a Senate committee.

Markell said recently that he has not given up on closing the gun show loophole.
